In diesem Falle habe ich die Songs dem entsprechenden Album zugeordnet. Alle Singles finden Sie auf der vier CDs umfassenden Zusammenstellung The Complete Capitol Singles Collection, welche im Folgenden vereinfacht als Singles Collection bezeichnet wird. Songs im Vergleich: Day In - Day Out 2. April 1953 (Capitol) 1. März 1954 (Capitol) 22. Dez. 1958 (Capitol) Die Aufnahme vom 2. April 1953 zeigt Sinatra als tech- nisch perfekten Sänger mit beeindruckender Phrasierung, also genau das, was für fast alle seine Arbeiten bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt (und noch einige Jahre darüber hinaus) kennzeichnend ist. Der Song selbst rückt in dieser Version etwas an den Rand der Lange- weile, wovon dann allerdings bei späteren Versionen keine Rede mehr sein kann. Hier aber denkt man unwillkürlich „sehr schön, aber im Endeffekt nicht weltbewegend...“ Ich finde zudem, dass Sinatra im letzten Teil des Songs etwas zu dick aufträgt und den stimmlichen Bizeps allzu sehr schwellen lässt. Die zweite Balladen-Version vom 1. März 1954 kann mich ansatzweise mehr überzeugen, Sinatra singt hier mancherorts deutlich zurückhaltender, Maestro Nelson Riddles Arrangement finde ich außer- ordentlich ansprechend und sogar noch besser als jenes von Stordahl. Doch leider, auch hier erspart man dem Hörer nicht das überzogene Ende, welches hier am Schluss sogar noch bombastischer ausfällt als bei der Erst-Version. Ein ganz typisches und von mir nur in den allerseltensten Fällen geschätztes „Hollywood“-Ende, bei dem alle Musiker auf die Pauke hauen - ich persönlich finde das zumeist irgendwie einfallslos, primitiv und vulgär, viel zu sehr auf vordergründigen Effekt abzielend. Die Swing-Version, die Billy May für das Come Dance With Me-Album arrangiert hat, beschert uns den Song in einem völlig anderen Kleid. Hier erinnert nur noch der Text an die früheren Fassung- en. Erstaunlich fürwahr, wie man die Aussage ein und des selben Titels durch ein völlig anderes Arrangement von Grund auf ändern kann. Sinatra ist hier der großartige Finger-Snapper mit gelockerter Krawatte und zurückgeschob- enem Hut, ein völlig anderer musikalischer Charakter als der schmachtende Balladier der zwei vorangegangenen Versionen. Der Sänger ist in sehr guter Form und swingt lässig durch den Song, den er vollkommen im Griff hat. So und nicht anders sind wir es in den Mitt-50-Jahren gewohnt und uns überfällt unwillkürlich leichte Wehmut, wenn wir daran denken, in welch vergleichsweise trauriger Verfassung Sinatras Stimme nur ein Jahrzehnt später sein sollte. Billy May arrangierte die Nummer effektvoll, aber trotz- dem unaufdringlich, Sinatra ist in Best-Form und somit wird aus der etwas langweilig und verzopft erscheinenden Ballade plötzlich eine Swing-Perle von Format – eine der besten Nummern des durchgehend sehr guten Come Dance With Me -Albums und daher mein klarer und eindeutiger Favorit. Meine sehr verehrten Damen und Herren: Es gibt darüber hinaus noch eine bislang unveröffentlichte Studio- Version vom 11. Dezember 1958 sowie eine offiziell veröffentlichte Live-Version auf dem Album Sinatra In Paris, welche insofern interessant ist, als hier Sinatra nur von einem Sextett begleitet wird. |
